ADDRESS OF THE PRESIDENT
Dear Principal Alama Iqbal Medical
College and Chief Executive, Jinnah Hospital, Prof. Dr. Eice Muhammad, Head of the
Biochemistry Departmment Prof. Dr. Kamran Azeez, worthy guests and Professors from the
Allama Iqbal Medical College, dear students of health sciences and physical sciences and
Members of the Khwarzimic Science Society.
Assalam-o-alaikum.
This is a source of great pleasure for
me to address this audience and represent the Khwarzimic Science Society. I sincerely
welcome you to the threshold of an insatiable quest for knowledge.
In my address, I shall give you only a
brief introduction to our Association. The Khwarzimic Science Society aims at building a
clearer understanding of scientific principles, methodology and implications to its target
people, who are overwhelmingly students. It opposes the traditional concept of
superficiality that prevails in the minds of students. Superficiality, especially in
science means morbid and care-free approach. It does not instill the true worth of
scientific learning in the students. Above all, our efforts all stem from the inspiration
we find in the Holy Quran and in the Mediaeval Ages when Muslims were at the forefront of
knowledge.
With this impetus, the Khwarzimic
Science Society arranges functions of diverse interest. These functions include
conferences, seminars, workshops, outreach activities, study trips, wide-screen video
presentations, research material provision and the like. Our events are conducted within
two strata. One is the one in which students present their research work in the presence
of experts. The other is where experts are invited to address an enthusiastic audience.
This gives us two-fold benefits and we are indeed relishing it. Nevertheless, our vitality
is sparked by our sense of incompleteness. We always aim at the better.
To give you a very short recap, before
the Ramazan, we furnished a whole month devoted to the heavens, mean astronomy. We had
invited an astronomer from the New Mexico State University who concluded a three-session
symposium on astronomy titled "the Cosmic Trilogy". We had an observation
session devoted to Jupiter and Saturn and the Leonid Meteorite shower and also a number of
curtain raisers on the same issue as well as a documentary film. Before that we arranged a
mono-topic conference on "A science Odyssey: Pakistans Nuclear Emergence"
in which we had invited Dr. Samar Mubarakmand and other scientists from the Pakistan
Atomic Energy Commission, who conducted Pakistans nuclear tests. In the same span of
time, we arranged trips to the SUPARCO Centre to learn about Pakistans satellite
programme and the Flood Forecasting Bureau. This is only a samplage of the events we have
conducted in the past couple of months.
Ladies and gentlemen, as you can
imagine, we always stress on the inter-disciplinary value of our work. With the same
motive, we have planned todays symposim on biomedical imaging. It is a great bearing
on the fact that physicians and scientists are not poles apart but they are at a common
footing. Their work endorses that of the other. Advances in biomed imaging would have been
a false illusion without the high-calibre input from the physicists and engineers.
Similarly, when doctors and radiologists put to use the same equipment in the service of
humanity, science breathes an air of satisfaction and contentment. Todays, symposium
is also a breath of fresh air for myself and my Organization.
Mentionworthy, is the role of materials
science and solid state physics in the development of materials for diagnostic imaging:
like NB-Ti wires in MRI machinery, piezoelectric transducers in the ultrasound probe and
materials for the cathode ray tube. I myself belong to the same profession and hope my
department uptakes the lead role in the development of these areas.
Finally, I would be extremely obliged
to mention the help of the Principal AIMC, Dr. Eice Muhammad for his gracious help
afforded in letting us arrange this function under his supervision and on his premises. I
am really grateful to you, Sir.
I must find this an opportunity to
invite you all to the Khwarzimic Science Society and partake of its benefits.
I hope you enjoy todays
presentations.
Thankyou.
